INTERESTING BACKGROUND
Iowa’s hard surfaced county roads, often called “blacktops” by locals, are logically named in grids. Names consist of a letter followed by a number, i.e. W13, A5, D17, V56.
Latitudinal east & west roads are labeled A,B,C…J, starting on the north border at Minnesota. Those running longitudinally north & south are labeled K,L,M,…Z starting on the west Missouri River border.
Because there are multiple roads in each of these lettered groups, a number is also assigned that can be used as an estimate of the distance between them in kilometers. For example, between D17 and D27 is a difference of 10K, or roughly 6.2 miles.
